Over the last several years, the popularity of psychics and mediums has exploded. Thanks to television shows, celebrity mediums and more; more people are seeking out the ‘help’ of mediums than ever before with the hope of reconnecting with a loved one.

It’s understandable why there’s so much buzz. It’s normal to want to feel a connection to those who have passed on from our lives. But, too many people come into sessions desperately hoping they’ll get the answers they want. Others come in too skeptical and hesitant to allow proper communication to come through.

So, what can you do to prepare yourself for a session the right way?

Don’t Share Information

Many people make the mistake of trying to give a medium as much information as possible about themselves or their loved one who has passed. It’s understandable to want to be helpful, but this can actually hinder a session rather than help it.

When I am in a session with a client and they begin to tell me their story, I stop them. I don’t need to know the story to give the message. If there is relevance for the past that applies to the reading, then your loved one will bring it forward. I do ask questions for the purpose of validation. It is my process to bring the information forward. Please keep in mind, every medium is different.

By giving a medium access to your personal information, stories, items, Facebook accounts, etc., it will take away from the experience. It’s the job of the medium to connect with someone on the other side and validate their presence. If you give them a bunch of information ahead of time or even tell them who you’re hoping to connect with, it will make the experience less authentic and you might walk away feeling more skeptical than before. I have had sessions I have had to ask my client who they would like to have come forward, for simplicity. Some clients have a number of loved ones who have crossed over and I need to call on who the client needs to bring order to the waiting room if you will.

Be Open to Different Communication Methods

There’s a common misconception that you need to be in the same room with a medium for your session to be effective. That’s not true. Thanks to technology, sessions can be held via platforms like Skype, or even over the phone with great success. Sometimes, it even allows for more evidence to be given, which means more validation for you.

Don’t Buy Into the Hype

I’m not here to denounce or undermine anything the mediums on television are doing. Celebrity mediums are nothing new and many people swear by them. A lot of them have seen great success and have become celebrities in their own right.

But, you have to remember that what you’re seeing on television is just that; a program put together for entertainment purposes. Everything moves quickly, smoothly, and sometimes seems downright miraculous. These television shows are, in essence, promotional tools for those mediums to continue on with high-end clients.

Every session is different, and it’s best to come in with an open mind and no expectations. At the very least, don’t expect your session to be the same thing you saw on television the night before.

Mediums are not magical. They should explain their process to you before your session gets started in order to make you fully informed of what will happen and what to expect. Learn what you can from your medium before your session, rather than relying on misinformation from the public.
